Last night I saw the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in a show called John Williams at 90, paying tribute to the incredible film music of the creator of the scores for Star Wars, Close Encounters, E.T. the Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park films, Schindler’s List and many, many others. One of the ‘others’ was Spielberg’s “Hook” which, as we know, was a film in which Michael had hoped to play Peter Pan as an adult. But the script’s jaded, middle-aged Peter who had lost touch with his youthful magic, probably wasn’t what Michael had in mind, and at some point the project was no longer planned to be a musical. Spielberg cast Robin Williams in the role, with Julia Roberts as Tink. But they were all upstaged by Dustin Hoffman in an OTT performance as Captain Hook. John Williams did the score for this as for so many other Spielberg films, but what I didn’t know, but which I learned last night, was that JW had actually written eight songs for Hook in anticipation of it being a musical. Two of those songs ended up being used in the soundtrack anyway. But, as I’m sitting there in the Adelaide Festival Theatre, I’m imagining Michael playing the adult Peter Pan and having eight musical numbers in the film - although they probably wouldn't have all been sung by Peter, but still... Music from "Hook" was used in the theme park at Neverland ranch, as anyone who has attended one of Brad Sundberg's Neverland sessions will know! By the way, JW’s son Joseph was lead singer with Toto. And, of course, the music JW wrote for E.T. is used on the E.T. Storybook album which Michael narrates and on which he sings "Someone in the Dark" written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman.) Ah, the connections we weave! - Kerry
