We are the world: the anthem of humanity turns 36…
Successful music made by countless artists who formed the USA for Africa, celebrates 36 years of its recording
'We Are The World', a hit song by countless artists who formed USA for Africa , celebrates 36 years since its release, this Sunday,. The initiative had 45 artists and the proceeds would be destined to fight hunger in Africa.
Contrary to what many people think, USA for Africa does not mean “United States for Africa”, since the acronym USA refers to “United Support of Artists”, something like “Support of artists united by Africa”.
The idea for We Are The World came up a month after the launch of the Band Aid project, which promoted the recording of the compact Do They Know It's Christmas? , made by English artists like Paul McCartney, Sting, David Bowie, Phil Collins and Boy George , who had R $ 56 million raised for social actions in Ethiopia.
Quincy Jones , conductor and producer for We Are The World , asked Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie to compose the USA for Africa theme song. The pair spent four days “locked up” in a house until the song was ready.
Four days before the recording, Jones sent each participating artist a tape with the music in its raw state and the indication of the verses that each one should sing.
On the night of the recording, on January 28, 1985, more than 200 artists wanted to participate, but only 45 names were selected. The only one who did not participate in the recording was Prince, who had other commitments on the date. Names like Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen and Tina Turner were present.
After the recording, the party in the A&M studio, on La Brea Avenue , in Los Angeles (USA), crossed the dawn. “It was a busy night. I behaved like a fan of all those artists, and I'm sure a lot of people did the same ”, commented Lionel Richie the next day.
“But the most important thing of the night was what one of the verses in the song said: people are dying. All artists in the country were intimidated to do something for those who are suffering ”, continued the singer.
The official release of the song took place on March 7, 1985.
