Michael Jackson was not afraid to take on controversial in an effort to bring the world's attention. Twenty-four years ago, on June 16, 1995 he released his album "HIStory: Past, Present, and Future". In the United States, some media organizations have accused the lyrics of "They Don’t Care About Us" of promoting hatred, intolerance, racism and Anti-Semitism.

In response to a reporter's question about the lyrics, Jackson gave a statement published in The New York Times on June 15, 1995. Part of what he said was:

“Music, in fact, is about the pain of prejudice and hatred and is a way of drawing attention to social and political problems.

I am the voice of the accused and the attacked.

I am the voice of all.

I am the skinhead, I am the Jew, I am the black, I am the white.

I'm not the one attacking. This is about injustices for young people and how the system can, erroneously, blame them.

I'm angry and outraged that I can be so misunderstood.
